Veterinary Acupuncture

Veterinary acupuncture is the gentle insertion of fine needles into the animal’s body at specific points shown to be effective in the treatment of specific health problems. Veterinary acupuncture requires additional training beyond vet school, and has been specifically adapted to animals.

how does it work? Acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theories of the flow of qi (pronounced “chee”) through distinct channels that cover the body. Acupuncture adjusts the flow of qi in the body, leading it to areas where it is insufficient and draining it from areas where it is stuck. In this way, acupuncture restores balance. Placement of needles at specific points also stimulates the body to release neurotransmitters, such as endorphins, to relieve pain and help the body heal itself.

does it hurt? No, not usually. Most animals tolerate acupuncture very well, barely noticing the insertion of the hair-thin needles and remaining very relaxed, or even sleeping, during treatment.

what does it treat? Acupuncture provides a sense of well-being, stimulates circulation, relieves pain, promotes normal organ function and increases rate of healing. It can be used to treat many diseases. Some of the things we commonly treat with acupuncture include arthritis, hip dysplasia and chronic pain.

Canine Massage

Massage is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, joints and lymphatic vessels.
Massage promotes relaxation, eases tight muscles and encourages good circulation for healing. Massage also assists the lymphatic system in cleansing the body and breaks up adhesions which in turn leads to better movement, in addition to many other benefits.

does it hurt? When working out tight muscles or around injuries it it possible that massage can cause some discomfort in animals, just as in humans. Dogs seem to understand that massage is beneficial because they stay put during the treatment and most patients relax visibly.

what does it treat? Massage works on many levels. It can be used to simply relax the dog and relieve stress. It promotes healing, and so treats injuries and assists with sickness. Massage helps with pain management, improves socialization and accustoms the dog to handling by a friendly stranger. We frequently recommend massage for our patients who have chronic pain or arthritis causing them to put extra pressure and workload on some parts of their bodies in order to favor weaker parts. We also recommend it for active or sporting dogs that have strained a muscle or tendon. Massage balances the dog emotionally and physically.

Pre-Anesthesia Bloodwork – We believe that it is safest for every animal, regardless of age, to have their blood checked for any abnormality prior to undergoing a procedure that requires anesthesia. We include pre-anesthesia bloodwork with our surgical procedures because we want to do everything possible to ensure your pet’s safety.

Pre-Surgery Physical Exam – We will check your pet’s heart and lungs, hydration, perfusion and general overall physical health.

Reiki – Reiki promotes a sense of well-being and calm. We offer Reiki to every animal before, during and after undergoing a surgical procedure in our office.

Top-quality anesthetic – We use the most modern and safest anesthetics available. We use the minimum appropriate amount of anesthetics, so that your pet will wake up faster and better oriented to their surroundings.

Pulse Oximeter Monitoring – We monitor your pet’s heart rate and oxygen levels during surgery. Our pulse oximeter monitor keeps us alert to the slightest changes in our patient, allowing us to maintain the most appropriate level of anesthesia.

Personal Attention During Recovery – We sit with or hold your animal while they wake up from the anesthetic, providing Reiki and assuring that they are as calm as possible and that they aren’t alone.

Pain Medication – We provide each and every surgical patient with the appropriate post-operative pain relief.

Dental Cleaning & Care

ULTRASONIC DENTAL CLEANING & POLISHING: This is the most effective cleaning process and the method of choice for animals with very heavy plaque and tartar, gingivitis or potential extractions.
ANESTHESIA-FREE HAND SCALING: For a limited number of pets, we offer Anesthesia-Free Hand Dental Scaling. Animals for whom this option is available have mild to moderate plaque and tartar, no gingivitis and no potential extractions.

ULTRASONIC DENTAL CLEANING & POLISHING: This is the best method for thoroughly cleaning your pet’s teeth. This type of cleaning is done while the animal is under a general anesthetic, as the noise of the ultrasonic scaler and the discomfort of cleaning the tooth surface that lies under the gum line can be overwhelming and frightening to the pet.

As with all of our anesthetic procedures, we take the best care of your pet, following our anesthetic protocol that includes a pre-anesthetic exam and bloodwork, careful monitoring, Reiki, pain relief and personal attention during recovery.

ANESTHESIA-FREE HAND SCALING: As our faces and fingers are very vulnerable during this procedure, we require an evaluation before scheduling an Anesthesia-Free Hand Scaling for your pet. During this brief office visit, we will determine whether your pet has the temperament necessary to tolerate being awake while being held still while someone scrapes their teeth with a sharp dental instrument.

Hand-scaling with no anesthesia is not as thorough or effective as ultrasonic cleaning, and is not meant as a replacement for more complete routine dental prophylaxis and care. Anesthesia-free hand scaling can be a good alternative for elder animals who need some dental care but are not good anesthesia risks. For our safety and the safety of your pet, we reserve the right to determine which animals this procedure is most appropriate for.

Dorn Therapy

Is a gentle manipulation of the joints of the body and the spinal column. Dorn Therapy brings the entire skeleton back into proper alignment and enhances correct movement of the skeleton, improving the health of the whole body.

how does it work? If the body’s foundation is misaligned, the entire structure shifts. The body can become imbalanced when one or more vertebrae are out of place. If there is a misalignment of the spinal vertebrae the body will compensate, usually by tightening spinal muscles in order to prevent the errant vertebra from shifting further out of alignment. A shifted vertebra can put pressure on nerves and blood vessels protruding from the spinal column and passing between the vertebrae. Tightened spinal muscles, pressure on nerves and blocked blood vessels can cause pain and other health problems. Different leg lengths are another common reason for skeletal misalignment. Imbalances and slight differences in the length of each leg can be corrected by the gentle manipulation of each of the joints in the legs.
In Dorn Therapy, a misaligned vertebra is a blockage. The therapy is directed at gently massaging the vertebrae back into proper position and relieving the blockages, along with associated pain and health problems.

The therapy additionally offers the advantages of classical massage, improving blood circulation and promoting relaxation of the musculature of the spinal column. As we work the dog’s entire spine, from the neck (cervical) spine to the chest (thoracic) and back (lumbar and sacral), we stimulate many acupuncture points on the spinal meridian and nerve points along the spinal column.

does it hurt? The treatment is primarily pleasant, but release of blockages can cause temporary discomfort. Human patients describe this pain as a good pain. The vast majority of four-legged patients enjoy the therapy very much and relax completely during the treatment.

what does it treat? Dorn Therapy can lessen the pain associated with arthritis, dysplasia, spondylosis and other degenerative joint conditions. Animals with these conditions usually adopt an altered posture in order to lessen or avoid the pain. The altered posture frequently leads to further problems such as misaligned vertebrae.
Older dogs have been helped to a better quality of life after treatment with Dorn Therapy, showing renewed interest in their environment and improved ability to climb stairs and jump to their favorite place on the sofa.

Dorn Therapy has also been used successfully on canine athletes, to remove blockages before they cause chronic injuries.
